Passing the Torch Again
The town of Angarsk is only 56 years old. This is a young, modern, clean town. It is located 40 km from Irkutsk, the regional centre. Irkutsk is our next stop. After a month of traveling along the vast lands of Russia, the third shift of the Expedition will be taking over on the bicycles there.
Despite a hot day, many people had gathered together in the Angarsk Victory Square. In order to find shelter from the hot sun, people were scattered all over the big square. Only a few people were in front of the stage. They say it was easy to get sunstroke in the heat. Two girls left to find shelter. I also wanted to leave the hot stage. What if I were have a sunstroke? But suddenly I remembered the Bible verse, “The sun shall not smite thee by day,” and I suddenly felt cool.
During the next two hours — paying no attention to the sun — we told people about the enduring mercy and love of God. We were rewarded for it. We formed small groups and talked to people who were ready to receive the Gospel. We prayed with them and invited them to the church.
Trouble Ahead?
There were many police officers at the evangelistic meeting. They were there to keep public order. We did not notice any angry or riotous people there. It seemed to us that only peaceful people were there in the square. But the presence of officers testified to the fact that there are people in Angarsk who might cause trouble, and there could be many.
