Tajikistan is a largely Muslim nation located in Central Asia. The country has a population of 7.4 million people, with some 95 percent represented as Sunni Muslims. Tajikistan is also is home to some of the highest mountains in the world, including the Pamir and Alay ranges.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Tajikistan fell into a period of civil war. While large-scale violence has largely ceased, there are still significant political tensions in the country. SGA ministries in Tajikistan are limited, with some support to evangelical church-planting missionaries, and also to children’s ministries such as our Immanuel’s Child Christmas ministry. Our partners were also able to help local church-planters with humanitarian aid after significant flooding in 2010. Ministry in Tajikistan must be carried on discreetly due to strong Muslim opposition.
