Editor’s Note: An SGA Storyteller in Russia shares the following testimony.

There are so many things in this world that allure or entice us. Money, prestige, and even people. But in the story below, it is God’s Word that drew the heart of one orphan man. After searching and questioning God for most of his life, he was finally led to a church where God’s Word was in the forefront. Truth was taught.

When our minds have been taught truth and our ears have been opened to hear, we can hardly walk away unaffected. Our lives change. What was questionable, with no answers before, is now a deep longing to soak in every aspect of God’s Word. Romans 10:17 says, so faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Giorgi was finally able to hear the Gospel message from a faithful SGA-supported missionary pastor with Bible in hand.

This truth completely overwhelmed Giorgi, and today he is now faithfully serving within the church. “I was so overwhelmed by what God had revealed to me during the church service that I thought about the words the pastor had spoken for a long time.” Please pray for Giorgi and his wife as they continue to grow in the Lord and serve His people.

My parents abandoned me at the maternity hospital, so I (Giorgi) grew up in an orphanage as an abandoned child. My life was saturated with sin. I sought happiness in alcohol, loud company, lusts, and forgetting about God who was always near.

“The first person God used to touch my heart was a ballet teacher. She . . . shared stories from the Old Testament while handing out candy. She taught us to pray to the saints depicted in pictures. Then a friend came my way . . . who opened my eyes to a loving God. But none of them spoke to me about sin, judgment, or hell.

“Since my childhood, I lived in anticipation, knowing about God, but constantly postponing a meeting with Him. I was always waiting for someone to adopt me. One of the girls from our orphanage was adopted. I approached her adoptive parents and asked to visit them. After our conversation, they decided to take me too. I was 15 years old. It was unusual to be in a family and have my own room.

After some time, a guy found me on a social network and introduced himself as my brother. I thought he was joking because I had never heard about any relatives. We met in a cafe, and he told me that I was the third child in the family, my father died when my mother was pregnant with me. My mother thought that it would be financially difficult for her to raise me and so she decided to leave me in the maternity hospital. I was shocked by this story. Later I found out that when we were sitting in a cafe near the window, my mother was looking at me from the street, but she did not dare approach me. She was ashamed of her actions. At that moment, she was already sick with cancer and died a short time later. I never saw her.

“God kept sending me people and one day I met a girl, and we started dating. Her sister shared the Gospel with me, but I did not respond to it. . . . Still, I decided to go to church. It was a community of Pentecostals. I was amazed at how people glorified the triune God, but I could not feel His presence. I was looking for something deep in the words of the pastors, but everything they said seemed superficial. During the three-hour service, I did not find what I was looking for. My soul suffered from discontentment, striving for something more.

Then the sister of a loved one invited me to her church. Pastor Yevgeny preached, and by the end of the meeting I was overwhelmed spiritually. I had ‘consumed’ more than my mind could handle. I was so overwhelmed by what God had revealed to me during the church service that I thought about the words the pastor had spoken for a long time. After that, I ran to church every Sunday sometimes without finishing my breakfast. God began to expose to me the understanding of my sinful nature, and that only in Him would I find eternal peace and joy. Only through God’s love did I come to Him and repent of my sins, realizing that without Him I was insignificant flesh, slowly perishing in the darkness.

“Six months ago, I married Alexandra, a young woman from our church. Together we serve Christ and share the Gospel with people.”
